11-2-23 THOUGHTS
Humility and subjection are key words in our reading below. Point number one must come from verse 6, “humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,”. The “sufferings of Christ” are called into our mind’s view. The exercise of authority by elders is considered, with subjection to them being right. These elders are admonished to be of right mind and behavior, good examples. Then, as in Eph 5:21, all of us are to be “clothed with humility toward one another,”. To the elders, the term “eagerness” is used. Maybe that’s a significant “take-away” for us all? I am sure my eagerness could use some self-examination and prayer.
1Pet 5:1-7 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Eph 5:21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
My Prayer:
O God, make us humble, submissive servants in the Church! Whatever role we take, make us eager to pursue it, as to You, and not to man. Take all pride and selfishness from us. Help us to be good examples to each other. May we seek the other’s edification and building up as we walk together toward eternity with You. Supply us with power to serve the world around us, as we serve each other. Bind us together, Lord. Grace to the humble, O Lord, please.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
